HAPPY BIRTHDAY KASIOBI

 HAPPY BIRTHDAY KASIOBI

---------------------------------

She is not a regular face on social media. She is reserved and fortified by her mien. We are writing in reference to the birthday celebration of MARY QUEEN KASIOBI OMAGHALI, the destined spouse of a foremost procurator and administrator of repute, EKWUEME CHRISTOGONUS UCHENNA.

Kasiobi, Nimo's Queen of valour has always fumigated her environment with her unassuming humility and gentle touch. From Njikoka to Ibeku Okwuato, down to Oko Polytechnic where she made positive marks on her trail, Kasi is loved by many who have encountered her. With her trademark dimples appearing below her eyes whenever she twinkles with humor, our celebrant's beauty is exposed beyond her own imagination. Nkasiobi's allure was sure her floral perfume that captivated her spouse's senses. The rest in this category is history.

As Nkasiobi marks her birthday today, we wish her a blissful celebration. Beyond academics and writing, may she live out the import of her name as a comfort especially in affliction for her dude. We wish her well.

Nuncio, Nwalo, Adesina others eulogize late Sir Ugwu
------------

The death of Noble Sir Christopher Onyeso Ugwu, former Chairman of  Customary Court and Noble of Knight of St. John International who passed out on June 5, 2020 at the graceful age of 85, has virtually turned his Ozara Mbutu Mbaise Imo state country home into a mourning chamber for those who have either encountered him or touched by his life.

The Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, Apostolic nuncio to Trinidad and Tobago was among the early callers who condoled with the Ugwu's family over the death of their husband and father. The titular Archbishop of Aquaviva who wrote to the family from the Port of Spain on July 15, 2020 prayed for all those who have been touched by the demise of the late Sir Ugwu, who laboured much for the Church and the society. The prelate noted that although Sir Ugwu died at the graceful age of 85, he was never old before his family and all who are dear to him. He prayed for his happy repose.

Relatedly, the Rt. Rev. Msgr Theophilus Nwalo of Ahiara Diocese has also paid a scheduled visit to the family of the late community leader. The retired cleric while signing the book of condolence observed that Sir Ugwu was exemplary in the Order of Knight of St. John International, his family and community. In his conversation with the wife of the deceased Lady Justina Ugwu, he relished and relived with nostalgia the efforts made by Sir Ugwu in Ahiara Diocese especially in the land acquisition Committee. Mgsr Nwalo is the Chaplain of KSJI District 5, Mbaise.

The Special Adviser to President Mohammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina has also joined the queue of sympathizers eulogizing the late Sir Christopher Onyeso Ugwu. Adesina in his letter addressed to one of his sons Dan Ugwu with reference SH/SA-MP/Con/20 described the deceased as a good family man who raised his children in the fear of God. He eulogized Sir Ugwu as a foremost leader whose life made huge impacts on his children, his people and community.

The torrents of tributes so far received by the family span through individuals from various works of life who have either encountered the late community leader or touched by his attributes. Among those who have paid in tributes include the APGA chieftain, Ezinwa Stanley Amuchie, Col. Livinus Agi and Brig. Gen. Kola Olowu, noble scribe and grand master of the Nigerian Temple of the Knighthood, Mr. Peter Claver Oparah, founding member of Sahara reporters, Fan Ndubuoke, Imo state NFF Boss and a host of other dignitaries. Catholic clerics in their numbers have also thronged the Ugwu's family home to pay tribute to the late Sir Ugwu and commiserate with his family. Fielding questions with newsmen, Rev. Fr. Fabian Njoku of Ahiara Diocese described the deceased as a man who made a difference with his life. The late Sir Ugwu was a retired civil servant who made his marks at the federal ministry of Finance and Industry as the Chief Executive officer of Accounts. He was a community leader and a devout member of Knight of St. John International where he rose to the rank of a noble. His remains will be interred on August 13, 2020 after a funeral mass the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Mbutu Mbaise. He is survived by his wife and children.

WHY PASTOR ADEBOYE SHOULD RE-THINK THE SACK OF PASTOR ITUAH IGHODALO FOR MARRYING IBIDUN
--------------------------------------

I do not belong to the Redeemed Christian Church of God, but I have the obligation of adding opinion in any happenchance that draws either opprobium or commendation in the public arena.

Pastor Ituah got married to Lucy Ann Summer in 1995 in UK under the English law. The marriage produced no child. When Ituah decided to relocate to Nigeria his wife Lucy refused following him even after persuasions. Eventually, he came back alone. Within this time, Lucy Ann got married to another man in the UK with whom she has a child now.

Back to Nigeria, Ituah met Ibidun his second wife after 10 years of having being divorced and then wedded her on 26th February, 2007, the marriage was blessed with 2 adopted children. Complaints started coming from members and Pastors of RCCG who felt that leaving him as a leader and pastor in the church would encourage other Pastors to follow his footstep. This led the General Overseer, Pastor Adeboye concurring to his dismissal since remarriage of a spouse when the other is still alive is against the constitution of the church.

On Sunday June 14, 2020, Pastor Ituah's wife Ibidun, an ex-beauty queen and event planner extraordinaire died in Port Harcourt, Rivers state where she had gone to erect some COVID-19 Isolation centers. Her funeral has been slated for Saturday, 20th June 2020 in Lagos. Pundits are of the opinion that this is a time for Pastor Adeboye and RCCG to reconsider the sack of Pastor Ituah Ighodalo and reinstate him as a senior pastor he was. This will be a way of giving a human face to the divine work.

CYNTHIA OBIECHIE, VICTIM OF NEKEDE TRAGEDY BURIED, REACTIONS TRAIL
-----------------------------------------------
The remains of Miss Cynthia Ujunwa Obiechie who died with her friend Samuel Osuji at 19 Vic-Mic Lodge, around JMJ Bus Stop in Nekede last Sunday have been buried. The funeral took place at her hometown, Umuaro II, in isiala Mbano Local Government Area, Imo State on Wednesday, 17th June 2020.

While she was alive in the flesh, Cynthia was a Higher National Diploma (HND 1) student of Business Administration at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede. She was also the former Miss CYON of Christ the King Cathedral, Aba, Abia State. Autopsy conducted on their bodies revealed that they consumed some hard drugs as some of it were found in their bodies.

Ever since her interment hit the social media, reactions have trailed in torrents. Some have prayed for her eternal repose while others have continued to vilify her, calling her names. In any case, the deceased has been laid to rest, we pray God to have mercy on her while asking God to give us the grace to learn from her mistakes. Two days after Cynthia's unfortunate death, a similar case was recorded in Ekiti, as we were bemoaning the mayhem, a lesbian killed her partner in Delta for having affair with a man. The 3 casualties must be facing their judgement simultaneously as Nigerian girls before God. But the question is, do we learn from other's misfortune? Your answer is as good as my gaze.

NIGERIA AND THE CERTIFICATE FALSIFICATION MANIA
--------------------------------

For some years running, the politics of certificate falsification among Nigeria public offers have been in the media. Our country has made itself a laughing stock before the rest of the world in the ongoing charade. Shockingly, the accusations have mostly hovered around serving governors, senators and lawmakers. The irony of the whole drama is that these principal officers have at one time or the other been certified fit either by INEC or any other screening body, and would later be confirmed fake by the court. However anyone interprets it, and far away from politics, Nigerians anywhere in the world are seen as people who parade fake documents, ranging from school testimonials to any other travelling document. If this situation does not worry any person, it worries Dan Ugwu.

----------------------------
IN EDO, Godwin Obaseki is the current governor who has done 4 years under APC platform. At the wake of his guber campaign, Obaseki was projected by his party as a learned fellow and subsequently cleared of his credentials. He has currently lost favour with Adams Oshiomhole the APC leviathan, as a result, his credentials have been confirmed defective and he is now unfit to rule under APC. The embattled Obaseki has quickly moved to PDP where he will be admitted to contest with those certificates that are now in the media.

OVER TO KOGI. Musa Wada the PDP governorship candidate was accused of doctoring his First School Leaving Certificate. Later on, the SPD candidate, Barr. Natasha Hadiza Akpoti accused the deputy governor Edward Onoja of age falsification. Both documents are available in the media for the whole world to see.

WE ARE IN BAYELSA. The Supreme Court stopped David Lyon of the APC from being inaugurated as Bayelsa State governor, along with his deputy Degi-Eremienyo on the eve of their inauguration on th grounds that Degi submitted forged certificates to INEC. Degi who has been a Senator before his disqualification was to take back his seat at the National Assembly despite the certificate forgery which denied him a chance to become Bayelsa State deputy governor. Degi's sack subsequently gave way for Duoye Diri and his deputy Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. Few months into their rule, Ewhrudjakpo was accused of forging his NYSC exemption certificate. Both cases and documents are in the media for the whole world to see.

WELCOME TO IMO. During the reign of Senator Rochas Okorocha as governor. He was accused of parading fake certificate from University of Jos. That accusation was later to be cleared after which his media aide Sam Onwuemodo disclaimed the allegation. In January 2020, Jackson Ude, the Nigerian-American Journalist accused Senator Hope Uzodimma of forging  a university certificate, alleging that the university in question has disclaimed the award of such certificate. The reality of that accusation is still in the spirit world. Currently, the Speaker of the Imo House of Assembly Hon. Chiji Collins is also accused of faking his NYSC discharge certificate and his PHD certificate. The accused and accusers have since been trading words in the media for the whole world to see.

As it is in these states, so it is in Adeleke's Osun and Adamawa's Jibrilla Bindow. What of
Kemi Adeosun who was accused of dodging the compulsory one-year national service for higher institution graduates. She was pushed to resign her exalted office as Minister of Finance. What about the case of Okoi Obono-Obla, the President’s Special Adviser on Corruption who was accused by a Committee of the House of Representatives of parading a doctored school certificate result which belong to his dead cousin? Obla is allegedly a graduate of Law from the University of Jos. The list is inexhaustible, but the focus sometime ago on President Buhari's educational qualification, and the opaqueness that grew around the matter seem to have motivated nosey-parkers to begin to look for certificates in the corridors of power, including certificates of participation in the National Youth Service Corps.

LET ME NAIL IT. It is now shameful that Nigerians today are also ironically poster-characters for fake certificates, 419 qualifications, and dubious academic affiliations. These stories, either from the APC or PDP or any other side, whether true or false do not help Nigeria’s image. Whoever introduced certificate forgery case as a method of victimization and political desperation is doing Nigeria much harm. I imagine that if any Nigerian were to go anywhere in the world today, and present the best, most impressive credentials, the relevant authorities would still go behind to double-check. Many of our students today who go abroad for additional educational opportunities are routinely asked to take extra tests that candidates from other countries are not required to take. This is the reason Nigerians are compelled to write English language examinations like IELTS, TOEFIL etc even when our primary language of instruction and education is english, and this does not give a thought to our leaders. When the rest of the world hears that Nigerian political leaders, the same persons who are supposed to take serious decisions about national, bilateral and multilateral relations are a bunch of semi-illiterates, draft dodgers, and peddlers of fake certificate, they are bound to look at the rest of us as imbeciles. Apart from these, the situation is also exposing incredibility of INEC and our judicial system.

A country where a hundred and thousand graduates are roaming the Nigerian streets in search of skilled and unskilled jobs, persons whose educations are under question are the ones making administrative decisions. We applaud this present government in its fight against corruption, but I believe that certificate scandal is the worst form of corruption which we must fight to a standstill. In the same vein, it is a very costly joke and mechanism to introduce issues of certificate in the Nigerian brand of vindictive and victimizing politics. In this vein, when such accusations are not real, the accusers ought to be prosecuted for defamation.

END OF RECESSION, RISE IN OIL PRICE AND DREAD OF DUTCH DISEASE
-----------------------

Nigeria’s economy is exiting a painful recession period; a time marked by a historic collapse in oil prices, exacerbated by falling oil production and inadequate policies which took a major toll on the economy at the wake of Muhammafu Buhari administration. The situation became so challenging coupled with the wreckage which the entire nation had gone through as a result of acute and miasmic misrule engineered by some parasitic leaders who were having unhindered access to the proceeds of the nation's lifeblood.

Per chance it eludes us, Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC remains the main influencer of fluctuations in oil prices. OPEC is a consortium that, as of 2020, is made up of 13 countries: Algeria, Angola, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. According to 2018 statistics, OPEC controls almost 80% of the world's supply of oil reserves. The consortium sets production levels to meet global demand and can influence the price of oil and gas by increasing or decreasing production. OPEC vowed to keep the price of oil above $100 a barrel for the foreseeable future, but in mid-2014, the price of oil began to tumble. It fell from a peak of above $100 a barrel to below $50 a barrel as OPEC refused to cut oil production, leading to the tumble in prices and eventual recession we delved into.

However, Crude oil prices have risen higher after the International Energy Agency (IEA), in its May oil market report, had predicted lower global inventories in the second half of 2020. Oil prices rose as new data pointed to a rebound in crude demand around the world. Following the rising oil prices, there would be new foreign exchange measures, attractive yields on government securities, and a tighter monetary policy that will make foreign exchange more readily available and help contain inflation. Consequently, this will also influence the return of investors to Nigeria. With this recent rise in oil prices, there is serious need to invest in the reduction of unemployment and address poverty in Nigeria. Already the IMF has warned that policy implementation needs to move quickly and comprehensively to facilitate economic recovery and help the country reap its longer-term potential.

For some observers like myself, the recent rise in oil price may not be too good a news for Nigeria. At the period we were hard hit by low oil prices, we were forced to look at ways to diversify our economy away from oil and consider other areas of livelihood. The huge investment made by President Buhari in the area of Agriculture is a proof of this diversification. Much of Buhari's Agro lofty feats were itemized in his 96 paragraph Democracy message of June 12, 2020. However, with oil price going up now, we may be losing the narrative. There is a tendency of returning to the 'dutch disease', an expression which was first coined by Economist in 1977 to describe the decline in Netherlands manufacturing after the discovery of gas fields in the early 1960s. Ever since this time, many African countries have also struggled to enable rising living standards after the discovery of oil. Nigeria has been guilty of this disease especially during the years of PDP regime when oily affairs were forcefully moved from economic to politics.

However, there is a sense of optimism that the economy may not collapse again soon. We have witnessed 11 quarters of consecutive GDP growth since exiting recession. According to the President, the GDP grew from 1.91% in 2018 to 2.27% in 2019 but declined to 1.87% in the first quarter of 2020 as a result of the decline in global economic activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Every single economy in the world has suffered a decline, ours has been relatively moderate. May God bless Nigeria.

The red carpet comes in a sequel: Our second sister, Mercy Nnedimma Uche kicks off with June 1. Our third sister, Vivian Gere Ekperi goes for June 5. Did it stop there? No. By June 7, my humble self Dan Ugwu raps up the week in thanksgiving. We have always dedicated this holy week to the Blessed Virgin Mary, our patroness.

 Floyd protest March in Lagos
HYPOCRISY OF NIGERIANS' PROTEST MARCH
-------------------------------

Since the ugly Minneapolis murder of black American George Flyod, Nigerians have trooped out en mass to stage a protest against the killing of their black skinned kin by Derek. In Victoria Island of Lagos, the protest has literally taken a life of it's own. Even when the late George's brother Terrence Floyd had called for calm and end of protest, Nigerians have taken to the streets with flyers demanding justice for their 'brother' who was killed by the white supremacist.

As bizarre and weird as that could appear, many people have described such action of Nigerians in the streets and in the media as a hypocrisy of people helmed in by dementia.

Now the question is: When will the world stage a protest march against the Igbo holocaust and near extermination of the Igbos between 1966 to 1970 by Nigerian government, without reparation; without regrets, without apology and with the acute suppression of the history and memory of such gargantuan evil?

When will Nigerian celebrities, politicians, elites, activists, crusaders and unionists heat up the Nigerian landscape, seeking for justice and equal distribution of the nation's resources and lifeblood? Like Dr. Bongo Adi noted, our elites have kept mute in the face of tyranny and oppression because they are enjoying the comfort of their homes. In them says Wole Soyinka, the man has died.  May the man or woman not die in all of us.

HERBALIST KILLS PASTOR WHO CAME TO HIM FOR RITUALS
----
A 48-year-old herbalist, Isiaka Ogunkoya has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for the murder of a self-acclaimed man of God,  Pastor Kalejaiye Ezekiel.

The herbalists confessed killing the pastor because he was in urgent need of a human being for rituals when the pastor came to him seeking powers to make his church grow and for his members to multiply. The herbalists who confessed that he is reputed for performing rituals for many pastors in the country, said he used pastor Isiaka for the preparation of a concoction for one of his clients in Isoyin district. When queried on how he used the pastor for his concortions, he said  he put him to sleep, cut off the viral parts he needed and prepared the rituals for his client who had paid him a lot of money before hand.

------------------------
The police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the native doctor would be seriously profiled and interrogated to know how many people he might have killed in the same manner and the identities of his pastor clients. However, Nigerians have reacted to the the herbalist's confession, and have wondered what most pastors are really gaining in visiting herbalists for powers.

                      JERRY'S EPIPHANY:

Who remembers the love doctor? The proprietor of LOVE CLINIC worldwide, who has restored fractured marriages and provided the platform for the celebration of new ones. There is a good news about Apostle Jerry Iwu. His fine wine has delivered of a bouncing baby boy. The new born who goes by the name NNAMDI REX NNAMDI has just recreated his father's native name for a surname.

Jerry did not hold the news to himself as goodnews leaks from both sides of the mouth. He has officially announced it and has contracted EVENTppm to make it popular. Eventhough celebrities do not censor the rights of their publicity, Jerry wishes it to be spread abroad as a testimony of God's kindness.

The LOVE CLINIC, his brainchild is still rooting for a better time to celebrate the first born. This editorial serves as a heartfelt tribute to the family.

"BY HIS DEATH, ABA WAS REDEEMED"

        (OSISIKANKWU: 10 YEARS AFTER)
                -------------------------------------

Do you remember CRIMINAL OBIOMA NWANKWO, (Osisikankwu), who was killed at Ugwuati Evil Forest during a gun battle between the task force and his syndicate who had held our Aba hostage. Abia state government had described Osisi's death as "triumph of light over darkness”. But you know what? Before Kankwu's execution, he explained why he decided to form a gang that terrorised the people. Hear him:

“We became militants because of the
failure of government to live up to its
responsibilities towards us. Many of us
          are graduates. Some are university
drop-outs, who could not continue for
want of fund or sponsors. There are
          secondary school leavers without a
          future in school or jobs".

Eventhough Kankwu's reasons cannot be a moral justification, it still provides a pointer to government social responsibility. Whether the government has up till now lived up to Kankwu's expectation is a story for another day. Meanwhile EFCC has insisted that former governor T.A. Orji appropriated N48b as security votes while he held away.

WHAT GOD MAYBE TELLING THE GOVERNMENT IN KYARI'S DEATH
----------------------------------

Mallam ABBA Kyari did not die in any of the Lagos State COVID-19 isolation centres. The former CoS died at the First Cardiology Consultants Hospital in Ikoyi area of Lagos state. Kyari who had battled with heart related challenges bowed to death at 82 and may still have done so with some hard feelings. The reason for this suspicion is not in short supply. Kyari's health challenges have been treated with mastery in the UK where he gets the best of medical intervention. Perhaps he will regret testing positive to COVID-19 in Nigeria, a situation that later complicated his health problems when international air waves where locked up.

Whatever commendations and condemnations we write as tribute does not change anything for Kyari whose remains have been interred at Gudu. The messages are even for those who write them. If Nigeria has well equipped cardiology centres like Kyari gets in the UK, he may have been set free from death at that point irrespective of his infection. Just like ABBA Kyari, most Nigerian politicians are bearing the burden of complicated illnesses. Many of them carry on the body systems, irons, single kidney, plastics, while some are subjected to all kinds of medical dialysis associated from suspected edema and anasarca. These sicknesses do not easily kill them because they have access to good health facilities abroad. Just last week, the 43-year-old Bayelsa born billionaire politician, Kenedi Okoko died in Lagos while reportedly undergoing a liposuction surgery when electric power went out. On a normal day, Okoko will only fly above Lagos to get the best of his services overseas where light does not go out.

----------------------------
What does God tell us? In his riches, man lacks wisdom (Psalm 49:20). Until our politicians spare a thought for this country and care for it like their property, they will always be caught up in one form of emergency or the other. In Imo for example, Rochas Okorocha who led the state with iron fist made joke of medical facilities. In all the 27 LGAs, he erected blocks, deceiving the people of constructing 27 general hospitals within a stipulated time. At Douglas, he also erected a magnificent building named Somtochukwu hospital. None of these dilapidating buildings had the shadow of a health centre. Perhaps the former governor is lucky because he has no single health problem and will never have any. As it is in Imo, so it is in Yobe state where Governor Buni recently purchased N600m Luxury Vehicles For 14 Emirs despite the fact that some public school Pupils are still learning in classrooms with leaky roof. The ugly structure stretches across the country. Not until our leaders feel the need to take care of Nigeria, the God of the poor will always be speaking directly to them in mysterious ways.

-----------------------
CAVEAT

According to the Lagos State Commissioner of Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, First Cardiology Consultants was however established as a separate specialist wing with staff dedicated to the treatment of complicated cases of COVID-19.

NIGERIAN SECURITY FORCES:
WHEN COVID-19 IS PREFERRABLE
-----------------------------------

For Nigerians, the fear of COVID-19 is the mark of wisdom. People have been forced to learn newer modalities to avert being infected with the deadly pandemic. Some of us who derive joy in socializing have lately found out that such exposure is currently the easiest means of resting in perfect peace. On it's part, the government has also put up some measures to protect Nigerians.

Unfortunately, the lockdown order by the federal and various state governments to flatten the coronavirus curve have come with their own burden. In search of safety, most Nigerians have ran into death and risk in the hands of those deployed to protect them. As at press time, yesterday (April 15), COVID-19 had killed only 11 PERSONS in Nigeria, but no fewer than 21 LIVES have been lost extrajudicially across the country in the hands of security agents. This presents a situation where it would be better to contact the COVID-19 and probably test positive and isolate in peace, than being killed by the police or Army even when you are still negative.

----------------------------------------

CHRONICLE

Kaduna state leads in the macabre bloodbath with 12 deaths already. At Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state, the Nigerian Police has shot 2 people dead. In Sapele Delta state, 2 others have been shot dead. Abia State also recorded two deaths arising from two incidents while Niger, Ebonyi and Katsina States recorded one death each.

This is in addition to the list of 18 fatalities released by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The commission said in addition to the reported extrajudicial killings, the security agencies have allegedly carried out 33 incidents of torture, 27 incidents of violation of right to freedom of movement, and unlawful arrests, 19 incidents of seizure of properties and 13 incidents of extortion.

Out of the 18 deaths, the Nigeria Correctional Service was responsible for 8 deaths while the Nigeria Police Force was responsible for 7 deaths. The Nigeria Army on the other hand was responsible for 2 deaths while the Ebonyi State Task Force on COVID-19, Afikpo South LGA was responsible for one death.

----------------------------------------

What pains one most is the flimsy circumstances that lead to these deaths.
In Anambra state for example, trouble started at Ezego street, Nkpor when some boys returning from football training in a nearby primary school field were accosted  by policemen drinking in a nearby restaurant. The boys resisted attempt to bundle them into their vehicle, leading to exchange of words before the police allegedly opened fire killing one of the youths instantly while the second who sustained gun shots wound died while being  rushed to the hospital. More painful is the fact that the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, Haruna Muhammed excused his men, saying the security agents acted in self-defence. This is how best the dead is made guilty in an offence starring the living.

What does these show? The fatalities speak volumes of the protocol and rules of engagement for Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies and their efficiency level to deal with citizens. This is sheer display of impunity and reckless disregard for human life in law enforcement by security personnel. We encourage the NHRC to ensure justice for victims of human rights abuse. Intimidated Nigerians must queue into the NHRC developed mobile application to monitor and document such violations.

We understand most of the policemen are not properly trained. This is indicative in their manner of pidgin English speech, bride inducing questions, wornout outfits and wielding of amunitions, but that should not be to the detriment of harmless civilians. It is not still clear why the Nigerian Army is out of their barracks. The country is not facing aggression leading to its break up. The much challenge we have is Boko Haram, so beholding their irritant attitudes on the streets is not impressive. The government must act quick before Nigerians die before testing positive to COVID-19.

MAURICE IWU AND THE COVID-19 VACCINE
-------------------------------------------------

When in 1985, a 13 year old non Nigerian female sex hawker introduced HIV/AIDS in Lagos Nigeria, the news sent panic, doubt and disbelief to the whole nation as AIDS was perceived as the disease of American homosexuals. The confusion infected Nigerians so well that we didnt distinguish the HIV virus from the AIDS disease. The complacency and mystery associated with AIDS made people especially easterners to describe it as "Obiri n'aja Ocha", indicating lack of cure for the deadly disease which has claimed over 34 million lives before the advent of antiretrovirals. To indicate further its lack of cure, proactive measures were then centred on 'Prevention is better than Cure'. At that point, it became obvious all hope were lost.

Fast forward to 2019.
Corona virus has come with its confusion. China took off with the virus until it was introduced in Nigeria with the help of a 30 year old lady on March 13, 2020. Just like HIV/AIDS, it is not clear if Corona is the virus while COVID-19 is the disease. We already understand that the description COVID-19 is associated with the December 2019 entry of the virus, and the WHO has moved the virus classification from epidemic to pandemic because of its spread. There is dire need to distinguishes the virus from its disease so we don't entertain much casualties as we had in HIV/AIDS before the arrival of its antiretroviral.

For now, apart from quarantining the suspects the only antidote we have now is precaution. Someone coughed in a taxi in Abuja yesterday, every person alighted from the bus immediately, is that the precaution? Just few days ago, 43 year old Jannifer Haller, has become the first person in history to test the potential COVID-19 vaccine in clinical trial. We pray the vaccine worths it.

Before Haller's trial, our own brother, home grown (UNN) Professor Maurice Iwu had presented a plant-based patented treatment for COVID-19 to the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu. This writer had personally interacted with Mr Iwu on the said case and he explained that it was important to note that COVID-19 belongs to a class of viruses that are very common, some more serious than others, the class includes the flu virus, SARS, and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). He explained that they are Ribo Nucleic Acid (RNA) viruses, which allow them to mutate easily and spread between species. Iwu insisted that SARS and MERS Coronaviruses are more lethal than COVID-19. After the discourse, it became clear to me that Nigeria is close to COVID-19 cure.

So while the Ministry of Health, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and healthcare professionals are actively engaged in providing treatment and support for the management of the Coronavirus infection, it is important to indicate that the Nigerian scientific community are making contributions towards finding a sustainable treatment for the prevention and/or treatment of COVID-19 as part of drug discovery programme for neglected tropical diseases, emergent infections and orphan diseases. This may be Nigeria's scientific breakthrough and curative offer to the embattled and 'diseased' continents.

WHAT IS NIGERIA'S PROBLEM WITH CHINESE AID?

Dan UGWU
-------------
Nigeria is at the crossroads of history. It has gotten to a point that being a Nigerian becomes abysmally frustrating and incredibly exciting. A pervasive feeling of betrayal and disenchantment is sweeping across Nigeria like the desert sand. The besetting factors of our democracy is the uncultured self-depreciation, self-immolation, stone throwing, name calling, buck passing, bickering, treachery, blackmail and wangling that swing as pendulums among the Nigerian people. From muffled grumbling to loud murmuring, and now unguarded and uncensored propaganda.

It is hard to outlive any week in Nigeria without being fed with one propaganda or the other. In the last few days, Nigerians feasted heavily on the 5G network deployment. Dino Melayi, former Nigerian senator was a major vanguard of the crusade. In the emerging unnecessary debate, social media analysts, caved in, pastors queued in and before the arrival of telecom pundits, the entire Nigerian space had been polluted with fake news. As the propaganda is gradually fading, fragments of the 5G writing are still appearing epileptically on social media.

While 5G news is fading, Nigerians will not easily be starved of propaganda.  Another information has preoccupied the media and this one for sure will rage for days and weeks. What is it this time? NIGERIANS WILL NEVER ACCEPT THE EMPLOYMENT OF CHINESE DOCTORS TO TREAT CORONA VIRUS. Where did the information emanate from? Three days ago (April 3, 2020), the Honorable Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire announced during the Presidential Task Force Media Briefing, that an 18 man team of Chinese medical experts are expected to arrive Nigeria within a few days with a consignment of globally scarce medical supplies, to augment the government’s efforts to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to Health Minister Dr Ehanire, the donations by the group of Chinese Companies in Nigeria, includes Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) and other Medical consumables, with one million surgical masks for health workers and also ICU ventilators valued at over $100,000, all sourced in the face of global scarcity of these items. In addition, the Minister noted that the Chinese medical experts, comprising of doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians and public health managers will share their knowledge, skills and real life experience of fighting covid-19 with Nigerian expert personnel in strengthening management of COVID-19 cases, especially with regard to critical care. The Chinese professionals will only educate our experts on the usage of some of the sophisticated equipments they produced and will not necessarily take over medical duties.

Ever since this information hit the media, it has been cooked in various pots as is customary with Nigeria. Sadly, the Nigerian Medical Association led by Dr Francis Faduyile has issued a statement saying the association vehemently rejects the spreading news of the invitation of Chinese doctors to Nigeria on the grounds that they are already experts. Some other analysts are of the opinion that Nigeria must reject any offer from China, maybe because they are harbinger of Corona Virus. This is coming after some weeks Nigeria received her own package of medical equipments from Chinese Billionaire Jack Ma.

Apart from China, South Korea and Taiwan are now sending resources around the world to help combat the coronavirus pandemic. As part of a larger global initiative to send Chinese medical experts to Europe, the Middle East and the Persian Gulf among other regions, China has already given $20 million to the World Health Organization for COVID-19 efforts. China is supplying millions of masks and other desperately needed items to struggling governments, hoping to build political ties and defuse unwholesome criticisms.

As we write, Serbia’s president plans to be at the airport this weekend to welcome a shipment of medical supplies from his “brother and friend,” Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Xi’s government has flown gloves and protective clothing to Liberia. It is sending 100,000 test kits to the Philippines. It is shipping supplies to Cambodia. More than 10 flights carrying millions of masks and other supplies are bound for the Czech Republic this week. In Africa, Ethiopia has commenced the usage of their latest supplies from China. Algeria has already received her Chinese envoy of medical experts with their consignments. Nigeria is next and after which the experts will land in Zimbabwe. At one level, China is reciprocating assistance it received. Nearly 80 countries sent supplies to China, some on charter flights they sent to evacuate their citizens from Wuhan. On another scale, China is deepening ties with countries that have been receptive to its outreach as it assumes a larger international role.  So what is Nigeria's worry over the Chinese aid?

Every government effort must not be viewed with the prism of politics. For any unbiased and sincere observer, this initiative would greatly build the capacity of hard working and resourceful Nigerian health workers at the fore front of fighting coronavirus. The encounter will sure provide a window of opportunity to strengthen our own response mechanism through lessons learnt from any country that has had the experience and can provide hands- on demonstration of dealing with the outbreak and give the Nigerian clinical workforce the opportunity to share global best practices.

RAGING SUSPICION ABOUT 5G NETWORK
-------------------------------------------

Dan UGWU

There is an ongoing debate in many quarters across the globe with regard to the deployment of 5G network for telecommunications. The central debate rests on the fact that there is huge suspicion that the 5G is harmful to the human person with its radiative effects. It has been a raging mantra even in Nigeria where conspiracy theorists have associated the network to the spread of the COVID-19. Persons like former Senator Dino Melayi have taken the campaign to another level. His video clips have adorned the social network where he is expressing fears of the outcome of the 5G.

5G is the next generation of mobile broadband that will eventually replace, or at least augment our 4G LTE latest connection. 5G is a wireless communications technology supporting cellular data networks. The 5G is engineered to greatly increase the speed and responsiveness of wireless networks and enable a sharp increase in the amount of data transmitted over wireless systems due to more available bandwidth and advanced antenna technology. Its  frequency spectrum is divided into millimeter waves, mid-band and low-band.

As of April 2019, the Global Mobile Suppliers Association had identified 224 operators in 88 countries that have demonstrated, are testing or trialling, or have been licensed to conduct field trials of 5G technologies. The first country to adopt 5G on a large scale was South Korea in April 2019. However, Swedish telecoms giant Ericsson predicted that 5G internet will cover up to 65% of the world's population by the end of 2025. As we write, 9 companies sell 5G radio hardware and 5G systems for carriers: Altiostar, Cisco Systems, Datang Telecom/Fiberhome, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung, and ZTE

Some 5G pundits contend that the new network generates radiofrequency radiation that can damage DNA and lead to cancer; cause oxidative damage that can cause premature aging; disrupt cell metabolism; and potentially lead to other diseases through the generation of stress proteins. This is to say that the 5G apparatus has a chemical reaction and biological interaction with human cells that can endanger health. It is even alleged that the 5G is harmful to even birds flying on the air.

--------------------
FOOTNOTE

Already, Nigeria is the first country in West Africa that has carried out 5G trials. As at November 2019, MTN Nigeria demoed 5G network. This was done in Abuja, Calabar, and Lagos respectively, with the hope of a nationwide commercial launch anytime soon. At Maitama Abuja, MTN Nigeria demonstrated a live demo of 5G network in line with the telecom’s decision to roll out 5G in other major cities in Nigeria before end of 2020. This is coming immediately after the telecom network successfully ran a trial of the 5G in its domiciled South Africa, achieving 20 Gigabyte per second (Gbps) with less than five minutes latency. Whether these telecoms companies take permission to launch their networks is what I do not know.

Most network users in Nigeria like myself have only been used to the 3G network before Artel popularised their 4G SIM card. I was opportuned to get mine few months ago as it doles out much call and data bonus and runs faster. Nigerians are end users of smart phones and we use them even without checking their negative effects. If this 5G will be harmful to us then it should not be deployed. Even if 5G will help us in downloading the Atlantic Ocean and Zuma rock the effects on the human person must be checked. This is where there should be synergy between Science, Religion and Technology.

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Science and Technology ought to queue into this debate. Telecom operators, technological experts and Prolifers must be involved too. At their instance, the 5G network can be demobilize within the parameter space of the Federal republic, where whatever that has been buried in form of earth cables or erected mask have to be brought down. Already the infrared and bluetooth electromagnetic and radio bands are having their effects negative on us and that's why it is not good to place these gadgets directly on our bodies. There are alleged pictorial evidences in Birmingham city where a mask emitting 5G network was set ablaze on the grounds that it is linked to the Corona Virus. Majority Nigerians have no access to good food and immune suppliments, so anything that will serve as threat to our poor immunity should be checked and confronted.

IMO LGAs AS CONDUITS OF LOOT
--------------------------------------------

FOR the past 12 years, Imo state has not had 'democratically' elected chairmen for the Local government areas. The situation of our 27 local governments in the hands of our governors should worry any good willed Imolite. IKEDI OHAKIM who brought in this menace did so with the mantra of one who has  come to work. His shoddy elections at the wake of his exit from the Douglas house was enough illustration of ill will as he selected only PDP chairmen. The chairmen were sworn in on August 9, 2010 by Ohakim, after the controversial Imo local government election of August 7, 2010.The council election was conducted by the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) headed by Chief Emma Nwoye, said to be an in-law to Governor Ohakim and a staunch member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Then enters ROCHAS OKOROCHA, whose rescue mission wind swept away many policies of the previous government. Thereafter on June 6, 2011 Messiah Okorocha in a broadcast on radio and television dissolved the councils, sacking the 27 council chairmen and their councilors on the premise that it was fraudulent. He did this even when some legal minds in the state raised the alarm, saying it was an abuse of the constitutional rights of the chairmen. Recall that former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Imo State, Chief Livy Uzokwu (SAN) had told a national daily that he was shocked by the dissolution. It was even shocking to many keen observers why a new government, elected by the people, would wish to start governance with litany of litigations capable of heating up the polity and capable of causing serious distraction in a state that voted for speedy change and development. What did he do afterwards? He appointed administrators for the LGs. That was when we knew he was coming for a kill.

The sacked council chairmen, who are all of the PDP stock, could not comprehend why Okorocha wielded the big stick on them. At the initial stage,  they made overtures to join in the rescue mission train of the governor. I would recalled then how these ex-chairmen on May 29, 2011 when Okorocha was sworn in at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, shed their PDP toga to adorn APGA uniforms with Okorocha's inscriptions on them. But that did not cut any ice with the new governor. Thus Okorocha over-ran the councils with his rescue mission train. The sacked chairmen and their councilors, who were then nursing their bruises, cried blue murder and ran to an Owerri High Court to seek redress.

In the originating summons filed at the state High Court, the council chairmen sought relief through the combined provisions of Section 7(1) of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and Section 23(1) of the Imo State Local Government Administration Law No. 15 of 2000 (as amended), to determine whether the governor, by himself or through any person acting on his behalf, has the competence or power to dissolve 'democratically' elected local government councils. The rest here is history.

Sadly, Gov. Rochas managed the LGAs with sole administrators for his 8 years reign. When he was done feeding fat on them, he conducted a similar election at the verge of his leaving office and brought in APC chairmen, the same process he condemned Ohakim with.

When EMEKA IHEDIOHA came on board, he disbanded the APC elements that occupied the LGAs and appointed administrators on the logic that the Independent State Electoral Commission, ISIEC, was not properly constituted for that election. He gave his administrators 6 months to prepare for the election, that grace period was subsequently elongated. Perhaps he was to follow the infamous pattern of his predecessors before HOPE UZODIMMA toppled him. Hope has disbanded the administrators appointed by Ihedioha and has appointed his set of administrators which perhaps will watch over for him all through his reign.

What actually is the problem in Imo? In the foregoing, LG allocations would remain at the disposal of the governor who presides over it as it pleases him. And this is what propels them into the bizarre acquisitionn of illicit properties and money laundering. Some of them even introduced a 4th tier government when the 3rd tier is not working. Gone were the days when LGAs were bringing about community development involving provision of social amenities. These days, the sole administrators are just there as caretakers of the governors. All these are happening while the various Houses of Assembly and reputable Imolites are watching with embarrassing apathy as state governors in Imo state use the LG structures as conduits for loot. The present government is not taking a different step from his predecessors. He has just appointed his acolytes who will be there as much as he wants them.

A leep into the disbursements from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) will convince any concerned person that our state governors do not have the priority of developing our local communities. For instance, the distribution of Revenue Allocation to the states and local governments by FAAC last year Febuary shows the Gross and Net Statutory allocations; Gross and Net Vat allocations for Imo. After the statutory deductions in terms of external debt, contractual obligations (ISPO) and mercelinous deductions, the National Bureau of Statistics shows Imo had over N4bn, exclusive of our 13% derivation. This is time to question the gut of our state executives. Since the Assembly members have become full time foot soldiers and hand writings of the state executives, statesmen and concerned persons must help the government carry out her activities as it should be rather than being indifferent. The situation of our local governments does not reflect the administration of the huge sum allocated to these LGAs. most of them with dilapidaying structures only labour to project the flex  banners of the governors and their wives, but the communities have remained underveloped without social amenities simple because the LGAs have become in themselves conduits of loot by our governors who have built fortresses for themselves daring us to go to hell.

THE ONE PLAGUE THAT IS NOT UNITING NIGERIA
____________

Only one PLAGUE and the world stood still. Only one PLAGUE and the World Government is humble. Only one PLAGUE and the world powers are confused. Only one PLAGUE and everyone is scampering for safety. Only one PLAGUE and all economy is shut down - schools shut down, offices shut down, streets deserted. Only one PLAGUE Mecca sent back its worshippers; Jerusalem turned back her tourists; Vatican locked out her pilgrims. Just one PLAGUE Churches are shut down, mosques are closed, All Sports are postponed; Olympic is shutting down, Clubs are sealed; the entertainment industry is groaning mournfully. Just because of one PLAGUE, dont shake hands again; dont hug each other again; keep a social distance. Before this one PLAGUE, many nations were in war. Syria and its combatants have been reducing Damascus to ruins in their air strikes, with America seeking the head of Bashir Assad, its major belligerent; The revolt in Iran was raging with its innuendos; Turkey was still living with accusations of aiding ISIS and others in the Islamic Maghreb. But the entire turmoil quenched before this one PLAGUE with all nations scampering for their united safety and survival.

It is only in Nigeria that this one PLAGUE is not bringing consciousness to the people. Rather than suspend squabbles and face the one PLAGUE about to kill us all, energies and time are still being wasted in fighting Mohammadu Buhari and enlisting his deficiencies. Before the one PLAGUE that has humbled and quieted political vilification and vituperations across the globe, my beloved nation is still soaked in the politics of the one PLAGUE, associating the pandemic with bickering, name-calling and stone-throwing that has characyerized the besetting factors of our democracy. If this one PLAGUE does not humble and unite us in struggle, then only Nigeria maybe awaiting not just one more PLAGUE but a locust that may quarantine this nation perpetually. May God save us from this doomsday.

OF ACHEBE, HIS WORKS AND HISTORY
March 21st, 2020 was the 7th anniversary of the death of Chinualumogu Achebe, a novelist and essayist, a man of ideas who bowed to the invitation from the Elysian Fields at 82 on March 21, 2013 at a hospital in Massachusetts, USA. Achebe died with the burden of a seer, a change agent whose literary pouch brims with warnings that can chart a new course for national rebirth.
As a man who lived and died in the service of humanity, the literary prodigy distinguished himself from his peers because of his uncanny knack for constantly peering into his country’s rabidly complex political and cultural milieu, deeply foraging into the mystical, and dwelling in the epiphanies of human experience and life struggles for churn out messages that illuminate the dark recesses of his fractured society. So distraught was Achebe with the Nigerian system and those who run it that he chose not to connive with the ogres raping his motherland by twice rejecting national honours conferred on him.
Achebe used his works to point out the grey areas needing attention in our politics. His writings served as adequate revolution for him to articulate his people’s culture and help the African society regain its belief in itself and put away the complexes of the years of denigration and self-denigration.
This is part of his contribution to the task of giving back to Africa the pride and self-respect it lost during the years of colonialism and to seek a way to repair the disaster brought upon the African psyche in the period of subjugation to alien races.
The first shot of this gift came in 1958 with the publication of his magnus opus, “Things Fall Apart”; the celebrated classic novel which became the rave of the moment, enjoying fascinating reviews across the broad spectrum of literary critics in international journals and mainstream publications.
It was the 1958 book that defined Achebe who has about 20 books to his credit as the father of modern African literature because he appeared to have told the African story with a native Igbo flourish.
The novel depicts the life of Okonkwo, a leader and local wrestling champion in Umuofia, one of the fractional groups of nine villages inhabited by the Igbo people. In this novel, Achebe described the custom and society of the Igbos, and the influence of British colonialists and Christian missionaries during the late 19th century.
Things Fall Apart was followed by a sequel, “No Longer At Ease” published in 1960, originally written as the second part of a larger work together with Things Fall Apart and Arrow of God which came in 1964, on a similar subject. Obi, the hero of “No Longer at Ease” is the grandson of Okonkwo, the tragic hero of Things Fall Apart.
The author further recreated a new setting for Arrow of God. There are both thematic and ancestral affinities among the troika. In Arrow of God, one notices the highlight of cultural attitude with a seemingly similar theme, setting and characterization as in Things Fall Apart.
Little wonder people regard Arrow of God as another Things Fall Apart. In Arrow of God, Achebe filled the gap created in his first novel which he saw as necessary before moving into the contemporary scene.
In doing so, he was able to portray the Igbo society under stress, a stress which is symbolically represented in the jealousy of Nwafo for Edogo, in the perennial quarrels between Ugoye and Matefi and similar actors.
Chinua Achebe, Literrary IconAchebe completed his vivid portrayal of the beauty and rhythm of African life with Arrow of God and ventured into the contemporary Nigerian scene two years after in 1966 with the publication of “A Man of the People”, a searing political satire that stripped bare the stinking closets of the band of predators who masquerade as political leaders in an unnamed neo-colonial African country. A Man of the People captured the recklessness of politicians and the endemic corruption in the nation’s political life.
In this book, Achebe foresaw what might eventually happen to Nigeria’s First Republic. As a seer he was, his predictions came true when the military toppled the government in January 1966. In the book, he taught that individual honesty, integrity and greater efficiency in public affairs can transform a society when the system remains unchanged. But for refusing to heed to Achebe’s warnings in the book, what was Nigeria’s lot? Series of coups and successful military regimes that punctuated her democratic rule.
Till today, the wounds of prolonged military rule are yet to fully heal in a nation where scars of an avoidable civil war that plagued it are also open for all to see. The impossibility of abating Nigeria’s quagmire seemed to have led to the birth of “The Trouble with Nigeria;, a lucid book that excoriated the vulgarity of governance in the Second Republic during the exceptional inept administration of former President Shehu Shagari between 1979 and 1983.
“The trouble with Nigeria is squarely that of leadership” says Achebe. Despite the fact that the book coincided with the 1983 general elections, the vampires still went ahead to rig the polls, and the rest is history.
Alarmed by this dishonesty, chicanery and weakness of the political elite, Achebe in 1987 once more demonstrated his ability to predict correctly when he released his “Anthills of the Savannah”, a novel about a military coup in Kanga, a fictional West African nation.
One thing stands the book out: expression of optimism in the ability of Africa to transcend its perennial limitations. Consequently, in October 2012, Achebe once again stirred the hornets net with the release of “There Was a Country: A Personal History of Biafra”. This was his last offer to the Nigerian society in his life time which tore open bitter controversies about the roles some leading characters played during the civil war. He did not intend to arouse animosity or open up old wounds, but rather to create awareness as he said, “for the unborn children.”
Six years after Achebe’s death, much of his literary advice have remained unheeded as corruption and leadership still remain the trouble with Nigeria. As a victim of colonialist piracy, Nigeria has suffered from a high degree of exploitation; as a victim of internal colonialism, she has been reduced to a veritable paradox.
Unfortunately, the culture of impunity occasioned mainly by power aphrodisiac has opened the floodgates for plundering government’s till. There is wide spread acrimony arising from visible inequalities and social disorder, intolerance, mistrust, bigotry, unhealthy propaganda, deepening hatred and hate speech, rapid deterioration of relationship between the peoples of the different geopolitical zones and other myopic sentiments.
There is a wide margin between the powerfully endowed politicians with sophisticated wealth and the educated and non-educated poor of the society. All these could form a catalyst for a revolution; a revolution which will take a measure where the poor will not only demand for their share of bread but commandeer it. It will be sudden and involuntary. There will be no leader of the rebellion or anyone directing them to act. Hunger and the survival instinct will be the propelling force. And by then, the so-called affluent in the society will either be compelled to examine the plight of the poor or flee from their wrath.
The situation appears to be quite like an earth tremor signalling a dangerous earthquake. The only way to abort any upheaval or revolt of the poor is for the wealthy leaders to heed to Achebe’s call by turning a new leaf and beginning to spare a thought for Nigeria’s less privileged. This will be an attempt towards cleaning the augean stables and Anthills of the Nigerian Savanah. Rest in peace, Chinua Achebe.
